Outdoor Camping Course Descriptions

Troop Camper Training
This course is offered as three meetings of two preparation sessions and one overnight.  Designed for adults who work with Brownie aged girls and older, this course will prepare a leader to take her girls to any Magic Empire Council camp facility.  Through a combination of classroom work and experiential learning, you will cover successful planning of camping trips, care and use of tools and facilities, basic fire building and outdoor cooking, basic outdoor skills, simple first aid and girl / adult planning. 

This certification is required to take your troop camping or to participate in outdoor camping skills such as outdoor cooking.

Pre-requisites:  *Beyond the Meeting, *Program Level Training and a willingness to get dirty!!!
*Exceptions may be made for parents or assistant leaders who want to serve as a Troop Camper with a trained leader.  Contact the Training Registrar for details.

Fee:  Participants share the cost of food and materials.

Bring with you:  Note taking materials, snacks and drinks and Training Record Card.

Note:  An official site orientation for the location where the training is held is included.


**Volunteers with extensive previous camping experience may submit the Application for Troop Camper Equivalency requesting a waiver for the Troop Camper Training.


Advanced Camper Training
Through a hands-on weekend experience, this course features advanced camping skills, more complex fire building and outdoor cooking methods, knots and lashing, compasses, GPS and geocaching and is appropriate for leaders of Junior age girls or older.  Participants will use buddy burners, vagabond stoves and bean hole cooking, lash a Chippewa Kitchen and learn how to make several camping gizmos, gadgets, and thingamajigs.  Participants will select and set up a tent site in the great outdoors and use a topographic map for hiking.  It will give a leader the skills to complete the Outdoor Program Enrichment patch series with their girls.  This class is required before taking Backpacking Training. 

Pre-requisite:  Troop Camper Certification.

Fee:  $20 for food and materials.

Bring with you:  A packing list will be mailed prior to the event.

Backpacking Training
This course prepares you to lead a backpacking overnight trip with your troop or group and includes equipment selection, meals, sanitation, safety and security.

Pre-requisites:  Troop Camper Certification and Advanced Camper Training.

Fee:  Participants will share the cost of food and materials.
